Answer · Ecommerce (WooCommerce)
What’s the Best WooCommerce Theme?
The short answer
For mid-market WooCommerce, the best theme is a custom block theme built specifically for your catalog — not a $79 ThemeForest theme. If you must pick off-the-shelf, Blocksy or Kadence are the cleanest WooCommerce-ready block themes; both run under 200KB CSS and integrate cleanly with native WooCommerce.
№ 01The longer answer
ThemeForest WooCommerce themes (Flatsome, Woodmart, Porto) look great in demos and fail in production. They ship 1.5-2.5MB of CSS and JavaScript per pageview, depend on 8-12 bundled plugins (each a maintenance burden), and lock you into the theme author’s update schedule. Your Core Web Vitals will fail; your conversion rate caps; you’ll fight the theme as you scale.
If you must pick off-the-shelf: Blocksy (free + Pro $69-$129/year) and Kadence (free + Pro $129/year) are the two we’d recommend. Both are block-theme-native, ship lean CSS (under 200KB), integrate cleanly with WooCommerce, and don’t depend on a 12-plugin bundle. Blocksy has slightly better WooCommerce defaults; Kadence has slightly better theme.json customization.
Custom block theme is what we actually build. We start from a stripped block theme scaffold, add WooCommerce template parts (single-product, archive-product, cart, checkout) styled to brand, build custom blocks for category landers and homepage sections. Total theme size: under 100KB CSS, no theme JavaScript beyond what blocks need. Performance ceiling: 1.1-1.4s LCP on mobile.
The decision: under $250K GMV, Blocksy or Kadence is fine. Above $250K GMV, custom theme pays back via performance, conversion, and the absence of theme-related plugin sprawl. Our Catalog tier ($12K) builds custom.
№ 02What about Astra?
Astra is fine for content sites; less ideal for WooCommerce specifically. The WooCommerce template parts feel bolted on. Blocksy and Kadence are purpose-built block themes that handle WooCommerce more cleanly.
№ 03Is Storefront (Automattic’s theme) good?
Functional but visually generic. We don’t recommend it for any client serious about brand. Its WooCommerce integration is solid; the design ceiling is low.
№ 04Can I get a custom theme that’s editable like a builder?
Yes, with FSE block themes. You get a visual editor (the WordPress Site Editor) for adding pages and editing content; structural changes still require dev work. Same as our Custom Web Design builds.
