What’s Off-Page SEO?

14 days kickoff → live $3K–$15K+ scope-tiered WCAG 2.1 AA baseline

The short answer

Off-page SEO is everything that affects rankings but happens outside your website — backlinks from other sites, brand mentions, social signals, Google Business Profile activity, review velocity, and citations. It’s the work that builds your domain’s authority and trust signals.

№ 01The longer answer

The single biggest off-page factor is backlinks — links from other websites to yours. Quality and quantity both matter: 30-80 referring domains is the typical target for mid-market B2B competing in Tampa.

Brand mentions (your business named on other sites, even without a link) are a softer signal Google still picks up. The mechanism: Google’s algorithms increasingly recognize entity associations. A site that’s mentioned 50 times on industry publications, even with ‘nofollow’ links, builds entity authority.

For local businesses, GBP activity, review velocity, and citation consistency are off-page signals that drive local pack ranking. These are off your site (managed in GBP and on third-party platforms) but are 60-70% of the local SEO ranking signal.

What’s not really off-page SEO despite the name: social media followers, post likes, share counts. Google has confirmed multiple times that direct social signals aren’t a ranking factor. Social media can drive traffic and brand mentions (which are off-page signals), but the social metrics themselves don’t influence ranking.

№ 02Is social media off-page SEO?

Tangentially. Social media drives brand mentions and link earning opportunities, but post likes/shares are not direct ranking factors. Don’t budget for social as an SEO play; budget for it as a brand-building play that creates secondary SEO benefits.

№ 03How does off-page SEO differ from on-page SEO?

On-page is what you change on your own site (titles, headers, content, schema). Off-page is what changes about your site’s reputation across the rest of the internet (links, mentions, reviews). Both are required for ranking; you can’t compete on one alone.

№ 04Can I do off-page SEO without doing PR?

Mostly not. Off-page SEO and digital PR are functionally the same motion at scale. The exception: local off-page (GBP, reviews, citations) doesn’t require PR. National or vertical off-page essentially requires PR or its equivalents.
