How Do I Track Phone Call Conversions?

14 days kickoff → live $3K–$15K+ scope-tiered WCAG 2.1 AA baseline

The short answer

Two layers: (1) GA4 event for tel: link clicks (free, easy to set up in GTM), (2) call-tracking service like CallRail or CallTrackingMetrics ($45-$80/mo) that records and attributes actual call volume by source. For most mid-market B2B sites doing 10+ calls/month, the call-tracking service pays back fast.

№ 01The longer answer

Tel: link click tracking captures the intent (user tapped the phone number). This is free via GTM — trigger a GA4 event called tel_click whenever a tel: link is clicked. Useful for mobile traffic where most clicks-to-call originate.

Tel: click tracking does NOT capture: actual call duration, whether the call was answered, whether the call became a qualified lead. For that, you need a call-tracking service. CallRail and CallTrackingMetrics are the standard options.

How call tracking works: the service provides dynamic phone numbers (one per source/campaign), forwards calls to your real number, and records call metadata (duration, source, recording optional). You see “Google Ads brought 14 calls last week, organic brought 23, direct brought 8” in the dashboard.

ROI math: a $45/mo call-tracking subscription pays back fast on sites doing 10+ calls/month. The attribution data lets you cut bad-performing campaigns and double down on good ones — usually a $200-$2,000/month savings on paid spend within 60 days of install.

№ 02Do I need call tracking for organic-only sites?

Less essential, but useful. Organic calls are often attributed to “direct” in standard analytics because the call doesn’t pass through a click. Call tracking with dynamic number insertion (DNI) preserves the organic attribution.

№ 03Will call tracking hurt my SEO?

No, if implemented correctly with Schema.org markup that names your primary business number. Call-tracking services have well-documented setups for this. Misconfigured DNI can hurt NAP consistency for local SEO; configured right, it doesn’t.

№ 04What about call recordings?

Useful for sales-quality coaching and lead-qualification analysis. Legal note: two-party-consent states (California, Florida, etc.) require both parties to consent to recording. Standard practice: a recorded greeting (“This call may be recorded for quality”) and call-tracking services handle the compliance.
