Can I Edit My Custom WordPress Website Myself?
The short answer
Yes. Custom WordPress block themes use the native WordPress editor (Gutenberg/FSE) so anyone on your team comfortable with Google Docs can edit text, swap images, add pages, and update meta tags. Structural changes still require a developer.
№ 01The longer answer
We build on WordPress Full Site Editing (FSE) with a custom block theme. The day-to-day editing experience is similar to Google Docs — you click on text and type, you click on images and replace them, you save and publish. No code required.
What you can do yourself: edit page content, swap images, add new pages from existing templates, update meta titles and descriptions for SEO, add/remove items from menus, manage media library, manage form submissions, configure post-launch redirects via Redirection plugin.
What still requires a developer: structural design changes (new section types, new layout patterns), new custom blocks, theme.json updates (color palette, font stack, spacing scale), plugin installations or removals, anything involving PHP or JavaScript.
Most clients self-manage 80-90% of routine edits. The 10-20% that needs a developer is what our Care Plan ($200-$800/month) covers — typically 2-8 hours/month of small adjustments. Care Plans are optional but recommended; without one, expect to find a freelance WordPress developer when things break.
№ 02Will I break the site by editing it?
Unlikely. The block editor is forgiving — you can edit text and images all day without breaking design. The pattern that occasionally breaks things: pasting from Word, which can introduce hidden formatting. We document the safe paste pattern at handoff.
№ 03Can I learn to add new blocks myself?
To a point. The block editor lets you add headings, paragraphs, images, columns, lists, quotes, and buttons. Custom blocks (your specific theme components like ‘Sonic Boom Action Panel’) require a developer to add to new pages.
№ 04What if I want a developer on retainer?
Care Plans cover this. $200/month for 2 hours of dev time (Standard Care). $800/month for 8 hours plus monthly performance reports (Pro Care). Hours don’t roll over.
