What’s a Staging Site?

14 days kickoff → live $3K–$15K+ scope-tiered WCAG 2.1 AA baseline

The short answer

A staging site is a production-equivalent environment where the new website is built and tested before going live. Same hosting tier, same plugin stack, same content as production — just at a different URL. Visitors don’t see staging; QA happens there.

№ 01The longer answer

Staging exists because launches need a rehearsal. The new site needs to be assembled, tested, and reviewed somewhere that isn’t the public site. Staging is that somewhere. Typical staging URL: staging.yoursite.com or yoursite.stagingsite.com on your host’s staging subdomain.

Why staging matters: localhost QA misses ~30% of launch-day issues. SSL configuration, CDN behavior, plugin conflicts in a real database, caching behavior — these surface only in production-equivalent environments. Staging catches them before launch.

Access during build: you get the staging URL at Day 11 (mid-sprint demo). You can navigate every page, fill out every form, click every CTA. The site is protected behind HTTP basic auth so search engines can’t accidentally index it.

Launch transition: when staging is approved (after Day 13 QA), the staging database exports and imports to production. DNS is updated to point the public domain at the production hosting. Visitors hit the new site; staging is decommissioned 14 days post-launch.

№ 02Can I share the staging URL with my team?

Yes, with the HTTP basic auth credentials. Most clients share with 2-5 stakeholders for review. We don’t recommend wider sharing — the URL is meant for production-equivalent testing, not marketing previews.

№ 03Will Google index my staging site?

No. Staging has Disallow: / in robots.txt plus HTTP basic auth plus a noindex meta tag. Three layers of protection.

№ 04What if I find an issue on staging?

That’s what staging is for. Two revision rounds available after Day 11 demo. Beyond that, change requests defer to post-launch Care Plan hours.
