What’s a Design System and Do I Need One?

14 days kickoff → live $3K–$15K+ scope-tiered WCAG 2.1 AA baseline

The short answer

A design system is a documented set of reusable patterns — color, typography, spacing, components — that keeps your site visually coherent and lets non-designers maintain consistency. For mid-market B2B with 25+ pages, yes, you need one. Ours ships with every Standard tier build.

№ 01The longer answer

A design system documents: color palette with semantic naming (not ‘blue’ but ‘brand-primary’ / ‘cta-default’), typography scale (5-7 type styles, used consistently across the site), spacing scale (predictable padding/margin values), component patterns (button styles, card patterns, form fields), and grid system (column counts, gutter widths).

Why mid-market B2B needs it: without a design system, your site drifts. The marketing manager adds a new page, picks slightly-different colors, uses a slightly-different button style, ships with hierarchy that doesn’t match the rest of the site. Six months in, the site looks like 4 different sites stitched together.

Our default deliverable at Standard tier and above: a documented design system in Figma + WordPress theme.json. Color tokens, type scale, spacing scale, and component library. Editor-friendly so non-designers can stay within the system when adding pages.

When you don’t need a formal design system: 8-12 page sites with a single editor. The design is contained enough that the system is implicit in the theme. Above 12-15 pages, the system becomes necessary for keeping the site coherent over time.

№ 02Can I view the design system after launch?

Yes. We share the Figma file plus a markdown CLAUDE.md / README in the theme repo documenting the system. Read-only Figma access is included; editing access is part of Care Plan engagement.

№ 03What if I want to evolve the design system over time?

Most clients do — brands evolve. Updates to the design system are part of Pro Care Plan ($800/mo) or scoped as a project. The system is built to be evolved, not frozen.

№ 04Is this the same as a brand style guide?

Overlapping but not identical. Brand style guide covers logo usage, voice, marketing collateral. Design system covers the website’s visual implementation specifically. We sometimes deliver a combined doc; sometimes separate.
