WordPress (WooCommerce) vs Shopify for B2B: The 3-Year View
Shopify wins D2C. That isn’t in dispute. For B2B with $25K-$200K AOV, net-30 terms, customer-specific pricing, and quote-to-cash workflows, the answer flips. Here’s why WooCommerce on WordPress wins the B2B comparison — with the trade-offs named.
№ 01The B2B feature gap
D2C e-commerce is a single buyer, a single price, a credit card. B2B is multiple buyers per account, tiered pricing by customer, quote-based negotiation, net-30 invoicing, approval workflows. The platforms diverge sharply on those.
WooCommerce handles all of it via established extensions: WooCommerce Memberships (account tiers), WooCommerce Dynamic Pricing (customer-specific pricing), WooCommerce Subscriptions, WooCommerce B2B (the dedicated B2B suite). Total extension cost: $300-$600/year. On Shopify, you need Shopify Plus ($2,500/mo) to unlock B2B features — and even there, the workflows are thinner than WooCommerce extensions.
№ 02The transaction-fee math
Shopify charges 0.5-2% per transaction depending on plan, even when you use Shopify Payments. Plus payment processor fees (2.4-2.9% + 30¢). For B2B with $2M annual GMV, the Shopify transaction surcharge alone is $10,000-$40,000/year. Forever.
WooCommerce charges $0 in platform transaction fees. You pay the payment processor directly (Stripe at 2.9% + 30¢, or a B2B-friendly processor at lower rates with ACH support). On the same $2M GMV, you save the Shopify markup.
This is the single biggest cost differential in the platform comparison and it gets bigger with scale.
№ 03Where Shopify legitimately wins
Operator simplicity. Shopify is one login, one dashboard, one update cycle. WooCommerce on WordPress is a CMS plus an e-commerce plugin plus 8-12 extensions, each with its own update cadence and breaking-change risk. If you don’t have a developer relationship, Shopify is the safer bet.
Theme polish. Shopify themes ship more visually finished than WooCommerce themes. The default Shopify checkout flow is best-in-class. If your business is selling consumer-grade products with fast cart velocity, Shopify’s checkout conversion advantage is real.
App marketplace speed. The Shopify app marketplace is faster-moving than WooCommerce’s plugin catalog on the e-commerce side specifically. New tools land on Shopify first.
№ 04The hybrid pattern we recommend for B2B
For B2B companies with $1M-$20M revenue: WordPress for the marketing site + WooCommerce for the catalog and quote-to-order workflow. The marketing pages live on the custom WordPress theme. The product catalog lives on WooCommerce. Quote requests route to a CRM (HubSpot or Salesforce) via the native plugin.
Build cost: $8K-$22K depending on catalog complexity. Recurring: $35-$150/mo hosting (Kinsta), $300-$600/yr in extensions. No transaction surcharge. Full code ownership.
№ 05How we recommend choosing
Pick Shopify if: D2C product business, no B2B features required, AOV under $500, no dev relationship and no plans to hire one, you’d rather pay platform fees than manage WordPress.
Pick WooCommerce if: B2B with tiered pricing or quote workflows, AOV over $1,000, GMV over $1M annually (the transaction-fee math compounds), you want full code ownership, you have or can hire a WordPress developer.
We refer pure D2C clients to Shopify specialists. We build the B2B WooCommerce work ourselves.
⚠What to avoid
- Migrating B2B from WooCommerce to Shopify because ‘Shopify is easier.’ The transaction fees and Shopify Plus pricing erase the operational savings within 18 months for any B2B over $1M GMV..
- Building B2B on Shopify Basic and hoping the workflows work. They don’t. You’ll be forced onto Shopify Plus at $2,500/mo to unlock customer tiers and quote workflows.
- Trying to run WooCommerce on shared hosting. WooCommerce is database-heavy. SiteGround Shared and Bluehost will choke at 50 concurrent sessions. WooCommerce belongs on Kinsta or Cloudways Vultr High Frequency.
