What’s the Best Heatmap Tool?
The short answer
Microsoft Clarity for 90% of mid-market B2B sites — it’s free with no session cap, full heatmap and session-replay features, and quality matches paid tools. Hotjar ($39-$389/mo) is worth paying for if you need integrated survey/feedback widgets. FullStory ($299+/mo) is only worth it for SaaS apps or 100K+ sessions/month.
№ 01The longer answer
Microsoft Clarity is the surprise winner of the heatmap tool market. Free, unlimited sessions, comparable feature depth to paid alternatives. Includes click heatmaps, scroll heatmaps, session replay, “rage clicks” / “dead clicks” / excessive scroll flags, and GA4 integration. The catch is small: Microsoft uses aggregated data for product improvement (PII masked by default).
Hotjar’s differentiator is the integrated qualitative layer: on-page surveys, feedback widgets, post-conversion micro-surveys, and recruitment for moderated UX research. If you’re running these as regular practice, Hotjar consolidates the tool stack. If not, you’re paying for recording features Clarity gives away.
FullStory’s differentiators: real-time recording (Clarity has 1-2 hour delay), advanced search (“users who clicked X then Y”), developer tools for SaaS app debugging, integrated funnel analytics, frustration scoring. Worth $3,600+/year only if you’re a dedicated CRO team or complex SaaS app.
Mouseflow ($31+/mo) and Plerdy (cheap, lower quality) are niche alternatives. Plerdy is the cheapest paid option but the interface is rough. Mouseflow has the best conversion-funnel native features for e-commerce.
№ 02Does Clarity really not have any catches?
Aggregated data is used to train Microsoft’s Clarity Insights product. For most B2B sites, this is fine. For HIPAA or financial-services sites, you may need a paid tool with a BAA. Clarity does NOT offer BAA.
№ 03Can I run multiple heatmap tools?
Yes — some teams run Clarity (recording) + Hotjar (surveys). The tracking overhead is minimal. Don’t run two tools that do the same thing; that’s redundant load.
№ 04What about privacy compliance?
All three major tools mask PII by default but require additional configuration for HIPAA or financial-services. Update your privacy policy to mention session recording, and offer opt-out per GDPR/CCPA requirements.
