What’s Domain Authority and Does It Matter?
The short answer
Domain Authority (DA) is a third-party score from Moz (0-100) that predicts how well a domain will rank. It’s NOT a Google metric. It correlates with ranking but doesn’t cause it. Use it as a rough competitive benchmark, never as a primary KPI or proxy for SEO performance.

DA was created by Moz in 2012 to give SEOs a single-number authority score. Ahrefs followed with Domain Rating (DR), Semrush with Authority Score. All three are similar metrics from different vendors using different algorithms. None of them is Google’s score.
Google has confirmed repeatedly that it has no internal ‘Domain Authority’ metric. Google uses hundreds of signals to rank pages; third-party tools approximate one of them (link-based authority) with a single 0-100 number. The approximation is useful for competitive analysis, not for tracking your own SEO health.
Useful application: scout the DR of pages currently ranking for your target keywords. If the top 5 results have DR 35-50, your DR 20 site faces a steep climb — pick easier keywords first. If the top 5 have DR 15-25, you can compete head-on.
Misuse: reporting on DA growth as a primary KPI. ‘DA increased from 28 to 31 this quarter’ is not a business outcome. It’s a vendor’s algorithm output. Lead reports with pipeline, MQLs, and rankings on target keywords — not DA.

High enough to compete with your target keyword’s SERP. If you’re chasing KD 5-15 long-tails, DA 15-25 is plenty. If you’re chasing KD 60+ head terms, you need DR 50+. Match difficulty to authority, not the other way around.

Earn links from real, authoritative sites (PR placements, podcast appearances, original research). Avoid manipulative tactics (link buying, PBNs, link exchanges). DA reflects link quality — the same playbook that builds real authority builds the score.
№ 04Which is more accurate: Moz DA, Ahrefs DR, or Semrush AS?
Ahrefs DR has the best correlation with actual ranking outcomes in 2026 because Ahrefs’s link index is the largest. DR is the most useful third-party authority benchmark. But all three are approximations; don’t treat any of them as ground truth.
