Do You Build WordPress Themes from Scratch?
The short answer
Yes. Every site we ship runs on a custom WordPress block theme built specifically for that client. No parent themes, no Astra, no Divi, no premium template marketplace themes. The theme matches the brand and uses WordPress’s Full Site Editing (FSE) so you can edit blocks without breaking design.
№ 01The longer answer
Our build process: custom FSE block theme with theme.json defining the full design system (color palette, font stack, spacing scale, layout widths, block defaults). 20-40 block patterns per site covering hero variants, feature grids, testimonial sections, CTA blocks. Page templates for home, service, case study, blog, contact. Header and footer as block templates.
Why we don’t use parent themes (Astra, GeneratePress, Kadence): they bundle features and styling assumptions we don’t need, add CSS/JS overhead, and constrain design decisions to the parent theme’s framework. Starting from scratch is roughly the same dev time and produces a cleaner, lighter, more maintainable theme.
Why we don’t use marketplace themes (ThemeForest, TemplateMonster): demo content does the visual heavy lifting; with real content the design unravels. Plugin counts skyrocket because the theme leans on premium plugins for functionality. Lock-in to the theme author’s update cadence and abandonment risk.
Build time for a custom block theme: 14 days for our Standard tier (25-40 pages), 7-10 days for Starter, 14-21 days for Authority. Code lives in a Git repo, transferred to you at launch. No agency lock-in.
№ 02Can I edit the theme myself after launch?
Block content: yes, via the WordPress block editor (similar to Google Docs). Theme code (PHP, theme.json, CSS): no — that’s a developer task, covered under a Care Plan or hourly engagement.
№ 03Do I own the theme code?
Yes. All custom theme code transfers to you at launch via Git repo with documented handoff. You can take it to any agency or developer.
№ 04What’s in theme.json?
The full design system: color palette, font families, font sizes, spacing values, layout widths, block defaults. Both the editor and front-end read it, so when you edit blocks, you can’t pick off-brand colors or break the spacing system.
