How Do I Make WordPress Load Faster?
The short answer
In order of impact: move to managed hosting (Kinsta, WP Engine, Cloudways) — saves 1.5-2.5s LCP. Remove page builders — saves 0.8-1.4s. Convert images to WebP and right-size them — saves 30-50% page weight. Add a cache plugin (WP Rocket). Upgrade to PHP 8.2+. Most sites can hit 1.1-1.6s LCP with these 5 steps.
№ 01The longer answer
Step 1: Hosting. The single biggest variable. Kinsta or Cloudways Vultr HF cuts 1.5-2.5s off LCP vs Bluehost shared. If you’re still on shared hosting and want a fast WordPress site, the migration to managed hosting is the largest single win.
Step 2: Remove page builders. Elementor and Divi add 800KB-1.4MB of JavaScript per pageview. Migrating to FSE block themes cuts that to near-zero. LCP drop: 0.8-1.4s. Bonus: plugin count drops by 8-12.
Step 3: Image optimization. Use WebP or AVIF (via ShortPixel or Imagify, converting on upload). Right-size hero images to display dimensions (a 1200×630 hero should not be 3000×1500 source). Lazy-load below-the-fold images (WordPress core does this by default since 5.5).
Step 4: Caching. WP Rocket ($59/yr) on most hosts, or LiteSpeed Cache (free) on LiteSpeed servers. Configure page cache, critical CSS, defer non-critical JS. Most managed hosts also include their own page cache; verify it’s active.
Step 5: PHP 8.2+. 35-50% performance gain over PHP 7.4 on real WordPress workloads. Check your version in Site Health > Info. Upgrade on staging first, smoke test, then production.
№ 02Will WP Rocket on Bluehost work?
WP Rocket helps but can’t overcome bad hosting. The performance ceiling is set by the host. You’ll get a 200-400ms improvement; you won’t hit under 2s LCP on Bluehost shared regardless of caching.
№ 03What’s the target LCP?
Google’s ‘Good’ threshold: 2.5s. Competitive in 2026: under 1.6s. Best-in-class: under 1.2s. We aim for under 1.4s on every project.
№ 04Do I need a CDN?
Yes — Cloudflare Free is the floor. Cloudflare Pro ($25/mo) adds WAF and image optimization. BunnyCDN is the alternative if Cloudflare’s restrictions are an issue.
